About Us: History

In 1903 Texas was just completing its transition from a frontier into an industrialized and agricultural economy. While gun fights at high noon had become much less common, physical protection of a young and growing industrial based business community was needed. With good entrepreneurial sense, Mr. George Smith, then a Dallas Police Detective recognized this need as an opportunity. In 1903, he founded the company that has become Smith Protective services.

This company was named Smith Detective Agency and Nightwatch Service and provided some of the first electronic fire and burglar alarm services in the state of Texas, while protecting many businesses with Night Watchmen services. Over the years as the business grew, the operations were expanded into other cities throughout Texas and other lines of services naturally evolved including personnel screening, fire suppression systems, multi-residential and commercial patrol to name a few. The lines of services diverged in the late 1940’s into two separate companies controlled by George Smith’s sons, Andrew and George Jr.

Clayton J. Smith

Mr. Andrew Smith spent the 40’s through the 60’s building up Smith Protective Services’s business, opening additional branches throughout the state of Texas in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, the business was passed on to Mr. Smith’s sons, Clayton and Mark Smith. These grandsons of George Smith still own and operate Smith Protective Services today, making Smith a family owned and operated business for 100 years.

Through the years, by exercising sound, conservative business values, coupled with entrepreneurial strategies, Smith Protective Services has grown to where it is today. 2003 is the celebration of our 100 years of service. We are the oldest and largest privately owned Security Company in Texas.
